The Ford Ranger has been the ugly duckling in the Ford line up here in the U.S.A. What I mean is, the small truck has not been updated for us here in the United States in years. The style of the last generation Ford Ranger we got here looks like it hasn’t been touched since the late 80’s.
Pretty much all Ford changed on the Ranger up until the end of its production, was the grille. People still bought them, because the Ford Ranger is a great truck.
In function, the Ford Ranger is a great truck like I said. It is capable, and really gets the job done. But a car design as old as the previous ranger really needs some TLC. A fresh update could pull new people to the Ranger, which means sales.
Even while some engines replaced others in the Ranger’s insides, the truck kept…trucking on. The internals weren’t great, and Ford cut nearly every corner so ensure you could grab one off the lots ASAP.
The Ford Ranger stuck around since it was so cheap to produce and could do basic pick-up truck things. It stuck around to see seven million examples made. That’s right, seven million Ford Rangers were made.
A new car is coming though. Ford has released plans that detail a new 2017 Ford Ranger and 2018 Ford Bronco. Both vehicles haven’t seen the light of day for years (especially the Bronco) but we will see a resurrection. I just hope they are redesigned a lot sooner than the last ones were.
You could get an updated Ranger in Europe, but we’ve been hung to dry over here…Where the Ranger was born. Because that makes sense!
The Exterior-2017 Ford Ranger:
It is clear that the 2017 Ford Ranger will be going directly into competition with the Chevrolet Colorado. The two cars actually look very much alike, and I can imagine Ford looked at the sales numbers for Chevy to see how viable this was.
The new 2017 Ford Ranger will be slotted right below the F-150, just like the Chevy Colorado is slotted below the Silverado. Anyway, it looks like Ford put a lot more money into this Ranger.
For 2017, the Ranger has a lot more bulk to it than the old model. The personality is much different, as this embodies more of a 4×4 all-terrain vehicle with a little bed rather than the full-blown truck the old model was. It is also worth noting that the Bronco and Ranger may share chasis and other internals.
The 2017 Ford Ranger will also feature metal bars connecting the bed to the passenger cell on some models, as you can see. You can also tell that Ford is targeting both the more refined small-truck market as well as the more rugged appeal, since you can some chrome fixings or big black tires,
Over all, it has a similar formula that the old Ranger had, but it is larger and more muscular; Exactly what the truck needed. If it is priced competitively, the 2017 Ford Ranger should sell well.
The Interior-2017 Ford Ranger:
The interior for the 2017 Ford Ranger will involve MUCH more than the old model did. It will actually be a decent place to sit. While the interior will most definitely be a simple affair to keep the cost low and margins high, there will be some add-ons.
There will be a very simple layout with the infotainment and air conditioning controls in the center, clearly separated cabin and updated Ford gauge cluster. Things will be simple and cheap, but clean.
You can get the 2017 Ford Ranger in two or four door configuration, with more or less (or none) room for people in the back.
Overall, it is attractive and much more well equipped than the old version. Actually, anything is better than the old Ford Ranger.
As for engine options, we will most likely see a 2.3 L four cylinder Ecoboost, a V6 option, and possibly a turbocharged V6. I am ruling out a V8, because I just can’t see Ford doing that. Ford is down sizing all of their engines, so dropping a V8 in anything other than a Mustang or F-150 Raptor is just not likely.
So, we should see the same 2.3 L four cylinder turbo from the Ford Mustang, possibly a 3.5 L V6 or even one with a turbo. As of right now, there isn’t news of a diesel variant coming to the U.S., but it is a possibility. Especially since Jeep is making the Wrangler JL, which is Diesel.
There will be a 4×2 option, as well as the wildly more popular 4×4 drive option. We can expect some sort of terrain responder that will allow the 2017 Ford Ranger to adapt to any driving condition. I can make this assumption, since it’s an industry trend for vehicles like this.
Being that the aforementioned engines will be reworked soon, so horsepower will change from where they are now. Expect anywhere from 300 horses to 400 for top range Rangers (I really wanted to say that).
